OurHood updates iOS, Android apps

South African private digital platform for neighbourhoods OurHood has updated and improved the iOS and Android apps it launched in March, offering a new design and enhanced functionality.

Disrupt Africa reported in March OurHood, which launched in May last year to provide private local neighbourhood networks allowing neighbours to access information specifically relevant to them, had launched its official app after a second funding round took its total raised capital to ZAR2.5 million (US$200,000).

The platform is currently live in over 800 neighbourhoods across South Africa, with founder Bruce Good saying the startup was on a mission to build stronger and safer communities.

“The ease and immediacy this mobile element brings to OurHood is going to increase the value to all our users,” Good said.

“Now you can find a babysitter, borrow your neighbour’s ladder, find that lost dog, or post and be updated on crime – from the palm of your hand.”

Our Hood is broken down into several sections, meaning users can skip directly to the things they need, unlike in more disorganised Facebook and WhatsApp groups.

The startup has already made some revenues and is targeting ZAR1.5 million (US$130,000) by the end of its first year.
