The Cape Town leg of global startup competition Seedstars World is to take place today, with 11 startups selected to pitch for a place in the South African and global finals.

The 11 chosen startups will pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges in Cape Town, who will select the top five candidates to proceed to a second South African competition round.

The second round of pitching will be held in Johannesburg on July 17, where the startups selected in Cape Town will go head-to-head against the capital’s startups.

The winner of the Johannesburg competition will be crowned South Africa’s best startup, and will be invited to the global Seedstars World final to be held in Switzerland in March 2016.

Seedstars World announced the 11 startups to pitch in Cape Town are freelance platform Mintor; travel app Tastemakers Africa; lifesaving tool mySOS;  platform for tradesmen platform RedFish; music streaming service NicheStreem; goods distribution service Last Mile for BoP; bitcoin anti-music-piracy startup Custos Media Technologies; mine mapping startup Azimuth; mobile retail platform Pushmoney; adventure travel platform Gummie; and satellite data gathering startup Senselab.

The event marks Seedstars World’s third return to Cape Town, and the organisation’s regional manager for Africa, Marcello Schermer, told Disrupt Africa the organisation was honoured to be returning to “South Africa’s Silicon Valley”.

This year’s world-wide competition sees Seedstars World expand, visiting 50 cities across the world, including 12 in Africa.

The competition’s African leg kicked off in Maputo, Mozambique, last month; where event booking and management system Moovi was named winner.
