Ride-sharing app Raye7 was yesterday named winner of the Egyptian leg of the DEMO Africa mini-events, securing a guaranteed place to pitch at the main DEMO Africa event in Nigeria in September.

Disrupt Africa reported in May DEMO announced a series of “mini-events” would be held across Africa in the run up to the main conference in September, with a view to encouraging extra applications to “less favoured categories”.  DEMO also extended the application period – now closing tomorrow – to allow for submissions prompted by the mini-events.

All four of the mini-events have now taken place; the last one held in Cairo, Egypt, yesterday.

The Raye7 app won in Cairo, with its mobile app which facilitates ride-sharing within existing social networks – such as within a work or school community

The first mini-event took place in Accra, Ghana on June 10, with campus events and news listing app Flippy Campus named the first mini-event winner.

Payday lending startup Shield Finance won the Nairobi-based event; while provisional driver’s licence preparation app Road Rules was crowned winner in Harare.

All the winners will pitch alongside 36 other startups at the main event to be held in Lagos on September 24 and 25.

The competition divides applicants into 12 categories, namely: Agriculture, Health, Education, Manufacturing, Retail, Media and Entertainment, Communication, Transport and Logistics, Energy, Finance and Banking, Water and Sanitation, Waste Management and Recycling

For those still hoping to apply before tomorrow’s deadline, Disrupt Africa has published advice on how to create a perfect DEMO Africa application.
