Global startups competition Seedstars World has named the 10 startups to pitch live tonight at the Rwandan leg of the worldwide event.

This year’s edition of Seedstars World sees the competition expanded to 50 countries – up from 36 in 2014 – with 12 African cities hosting legs of the competition.

Today is the turn of Rwanda’s most promising startups to go head-to-head, to win a place at the global finals to be held in Switzerland in February 2016, where all the regional finalists will compete for US$500,000 in equity investment.

“Rwanda is one of the most advanced countries in Africa when it comes to ICT and startups. We are very much looking forward to seeing what the local entrepreneurs have in store for the judges,” said Marcello Schermer, regional manager for Africa at Seedstars World.

The Rwandan startups set to pitch in Kigali are online marketplaces Yubeyi and Asuqu; Practice 4ne– an online platform connecting students, schools, teachers and parents; Cartoon Home Network, which provides 3d simulated education materials to help children through curriculum and tests; Mergims – a mobile application connecting migrants back to merchants in their countries of origin so they can buy things for relatives at home; bus ticketing app Tega; medical consultation platform mTiba; SafeMotos – the Uber for African motorcycle taxis; international airtime and electricity top-up service Istayconnected; and online grocery delivery service Grocewheels.

Tonight’s event is hosted by Kigali-based co-working space KLab.

Seedstars World events have already taken place in Mozambique, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana and Ivory Coast; and following today’s heat in Rwanda, the competition moves on to Uganda on September 11.
