Job data shows Johannesburg as startup centre of SA

There are more than twice as many startup jobs in Johannesburg as there are in Cape Town, suggesting the city has reclaimed its crown as the startup centre of South Africa.

This is according to South African online job listing data from job aggregator Adzuna, which says this is a turnaround from six months ago, when Cape Town had double the startup job listings of Johannesburg.

Adzuna noticed the trend during March when first setting the two cities against each other as “startup capitals” of the country. Johannesburg boasts over 200 positions advertised, while Cape Town falls short of a total of 100.

“While such data does not always tell the full story, job vacancies are a very solid source of economic activity in certain sectors,” said Jesse Green, country manager for Adzuna South Africa.

“Our data has also been known to predict reserve bank hikes when average salaries posted on jobs increase over time, showing a higher household income, causing a rate hike to curb inflation. Similarly, job listings for startups increasing in a certain area do show a picture of increased business there. It’s a sure sign that things in Johannesburg have picked up steam in the last six months.”

Job listings for startups call for Ruby on Rails developers, marketing staff and chief technical officers (CTOs), while many fintech and e-commerce businesses are posting adverts in both Johannesburg and Cape Town.
