PIVOT East names 52 startups as semi-finalists

Fifty-two startups have been named semi-finalists for this year’s edition of the PIVOT East startups competition, which will be held in Nairobi, Kenya.

PIVOT East, organised by m:lab East Africa, has been held annually since 2011. Disrupt Africa reported extensively from last year’s event, which saw the likes of SafeMotos, Duma Works and Shield Finance named category winners.

Judges have selected 52 startups from the East Africa region as semi-finalists in five categories, and will now choose 25 startups to pitch in front of an audience of investors, media and other stakeholders at the main event on November 15.

The 11 semi-finalists in the Finance category are rewards startup ForeverAppy, water supply management platform WaterTek, tax software product BusinessTYC, payments startup DusuPay, price comparison portal SoKompare, loans startup Kibugee, security platform Samsam, trading portal A-Traders, anti-money laundering solution Ujuzi Software Solutions, payments startup Cytrone Pay, and customer relationship management solution Paid.

Ten startups have been selected in the Enterprise category, namely ticketing platform Mobiticket, offers platform Travo, jobs startup Ajira, enterprise resource planning software SapamaERP, office management solution TumaCredo, real estate platform e-Kodi, telemedicine startup X20 Labs, renting platform Sumuni, rent paying platform e-PayRent, and business management software KlevaPlus.

The 11 semi-finalists in the Society and Governance category are agritech startup MoBFIT, farmer trading platform Markit Opportunity, ambulance app Flare, e-learning startup SkoolDesk, student planner AirKlip, free-to-air TV service Elimu TV, school management platform Medulla Shelf, information management system Quantum Analytics, edtech startup Elimu Yetu, e-health company AfyaIQ, and e-governance startup Techno Stuffs.

The 10 startups selected for Utilities are jobs startup myhr, construction marketplace Mobilized Construction, IoT startup Chimera Smart Home, charging solution Aloyo Electronics, waste management company Alternative Waste Technologies, energy startup Savanna Circuit Technologies, information platform FAMALIA, Wi-Fi startup weSurf, electric bird incubator startup Simon Tito Foods, and water monitoring solution Tech Water Solutions.

Ten Entertainment semi-finalists have also been picked, namely music royalty platform Request Africa, learning startup DreamAfrica, 3D mobile game app Tamithi, online fashion retailer Cloud 9 Kenya, photo app Itechgen, animation studio Rogech, music platform Covercloud, women-focused startup Creatives Piazza, social network MyLoyal Tech International, and media platform The Campus Lady Magazine.
