Millicom today launched the Millicom Foundation, set to support digital innovators in Africa and Latin America through its US$10 million budget and mentoring programmes.

Millicom said the foundation will provide social innovators with business advice, technological support and mentoring from Millicom’s employees.

“This independent foundation is a part of our commitment to create a digital lifestyle for everyone. It will do more than just provide cash for ambitious social startups– it will support digital innovators to grow their ideas and scale them across markets,” said Millicom chief executive officer (CEO) Hans-Holger Albrecht.

The Foundation will be headed up by executive director and social entrepreneur Till Behnke, and will identify innovative startups through the Digital Changemakers Award, to run in 11 markets across Africa and Latin America.

According to Foundation trustee, Peter Eigen – founder of Transparency International -, the Foundation acknowledges the key role technology has in promoting open societies in Africa and Latin America.

“The social innovators supported by the Millicom Foundation will empower people on both continents,” said Eigen.
