Events startup Moovi wins Seedstars Mozambique leg

Event booking and management system Moovi was named the winner of the Mozambique leg of the global Seedstars World pitching competition in Maputo last night, and will now have the chance to pitch for US$500,000 in equity at the final in Geneva in February.

Disrupt Africa reported yesterday Seedstars World was kicking off a string of 12 African events in Mozambique, with 11 startups to pitch for the Mozambique winner’s title at the American Cultural Centre.

Winner Moovi beat off competition from fellow startups Maparato, Taxi Track, MMO, Time 2 Work, Marrar, Compra, Cyac, Xava, No Code and Mozambikes.

Founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Dario Mungoi said going to the global final was “an incredible opportunity” to showcase innovation from Mozambique.

“Seedstars World is going to come back year after year and see the innovation grow. Personally the win is an amazing opportunity to network and grow and share with my peers everything I learn,” he said.

Jose Ribeiro, head of business banking at Barclays Mozambique and a member of the jury on the night, said the event was a great demonstration of Mozambican talent.

“Barclays was proud to be part of it along with UX and Seedstars World. I believe that the ecosystem can only go from strength to strength in the years to come,” he said.

Seedstars World’s next stop in Africa will be South Africa, where Seedstars Cape Town will take place on June 30 at the 22seven amphitheatre. The African tour will then roll on to Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Botswana.
