Africa Mobile App Challenge offers Kenyans cash prizes, incubation

Kenya’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has partnered China’s AVIC International Holding Corporation and local makerspace Gearbox to launch the Africa Mobile App Challenge, offering cash prizes and incubation to the winners.

The challenge, for which applications are now open, aims to assist recent college graduates and youth with basic knowledge of computer programming to obtain training in mobile app development.

It also looks to produce solutions for connecting Kenyan innovations with the public for showcasing their skills and generating interest among local and global companies looking for top talent in Kenya.

The winner of the challenge will receive US$5,000 and access to Gearbox’s incubation and business development services for up to six months for no charge. Gearbox officially launched its hardware incubation programme this month.

Second place will receive a cash prize of US$2,000, while third place will receive US$1,000. Applicants must submit a copy of their school transcript alongside their application to prove they have taken the required computer language classes. The deadline is July 18, and the contest will take place between July 27 and August 8 at the Kenya Technical Teachers College (KTTC) in Runda Estate, Nairobi.
