Easy Taxi continues Kenyan expansion with Mombasa launch

Taxi app Easy Taxi has continued its recent expansion in Kenya with a launch in the coastal city of Mombasa, saying it plans to scale its initial presence over time.

Easy Taxi, which launched in Brazil in 2011 and now operates in 420 cities across Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia, only operated in Nairobi until June, when it expanded to Nakuru.

It has now continued this process with a launch in Mombasa, with the company saying the move was encouraged by demand.

“In the last few months, we have received a lot of enquiries from our customers regarding the availability of our service in Mombasa. Well, you asked and we listened,” Easy Taxi said.

Initially, Easy Taxi will be readily available in Nyali and at Moi International Airport, but the company said it would be rapidly expanding to other areas of the city.

Easy Taxi has also been expanding its product offering in recent months, with Disrupt Africa reporting in September the taxi hailing startup, which also has African operations in Egypt and Nigeria, had launched a version of its taxi app integrated with Microsoft’s email solution Outlook.

The new app makes it possible for a user to request a taxi within their Outlook email when reminded of a calendar event, with the solution aimed at optimising arrival time at meetings, events, lunches, and other commitments.

Meanwhile, in March the company launched Easy Taxi Pay in Kenya, an in-app cashless payment option allowing customers to add their credit or debit cards and pay for a ride by simply tapping their smartphone screen.
