Object recognition software creator Dalil has been crowned winner of Seedstars Algeria, and will compete for up to USS$1 million in funding at the global finals to be held Switzerland in April 2017.

Nine startups pitched head-to-head at the local heat held in Algiers on Saturday (October 29); in front of an audience of over 200 people. A panel of four judges selected the winner.

Dalil was named in first place, for its object recognition and navigation system for visually impaired people. The startup’s solution sees camera glasses – or any kind of camera – linked to a mobile application to help the blind detect and recognize objects around them.

Dalil progresses to the global finals, where it will represent Algeria alongside other regional winners; and battle it out for up to US$1 million in equity investment.

In second place came digital marketing startup Databies, which has designed analytic dashboards for digital marketing including competitive intelligence and innovative customer care solutions based on machine learning.

E-merchant and logistics platform Batolis.com was named in third place.

In Africa, Seedstars World has already chosen winners in Egypt, Tunisia, South Africa, Mozambique, Angola, NigeriaGhana, Ivory Coast, Mali, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Senegal and Zimbabwe. The next event takes place in Botswana.
