Startups named finalists for West Africa Mobile Awards

Several startups have been shortlisted as finalists for the second West Africa Mobile Awards (WAMAS), which recognise the region’s leading mobile and tech companies.

Over 150 applications from across 14 countries were made or this year’s WAMAS, which will take place on May 18 in Lagos with over 150 mobile industry executives, international media, investors, judges and sponsors in attendance.

The WAMAS are supported by BBM, Mobile West Africa (MWA), AppsAfrica, Wimbart PR, Dress Me Outlet and Kasi Insights, with the judging panel featuring experts from AppsTech, Disrupt Africa, Women In Tech Africa and Co-Creation Hub (CcHub).

Nigerian ed-tech startup ScholarX has been nominated in the Best App category alongside JORG Technologies, MyAds Global, PayWithCapture and Sliide Airtime, while the Commerce & Retail category features BrowseDotCom, BuyOverChat Technologies, Dress Me Outlet, Jiji.ng and OLX.

Nigerian startups Flutterwave and Piggybank are nominated in the Fintech category alongside Bincom ICT Solution, GoodWealth and Mahindra Comviva, with the Mobile Education category including Alassaut.com, iConcepts, Opportunity Space, Optiweb Communications and Solutech.edu.sn.

Sliide Airtime gets a second nomination in the Mobile Innovation category alongside Eskimi, MallforAfrica, Optiweb Communications and VAS2Nets Technologies, while the Mobile Marketing Campaign category is made up of Bloom Interactive, Cloomify, Tecno Mobile, The Guardian and Unilever.

Corbyn Munnik of Sliide is also nominated for Young Gun of the Year Award, alongside Andrew Airelobhegbe of ogaVenue), Iyin Aboyeji of Flutterwave and Odionye Confidence of Beat Traffik.

Meanwhile, AppsTech founder and general startup scene luminary Rebecca Enonchong is nominated for the Outstanding Industry Achievement award, as is Faith Adesemowo of Social Lender.
