Seedstars World looking for SA “wildcards”

Global early-stage startups competition Seedstars World is inviting “wildcard” applications from South African startups in provinces outside the Western Cape and Gauteng, with three additional startups to be given spots in the country-wide finals.

Seedstars World has already held South African events in Cape Town and Johannesburg, with startups from each local event progressing to the country-wide finals. Three startups were picked in Cape Town, and four in Johannesburg.

The seven startups will be joined by a further three from around the country in a South Africa-wide final on June 29 – the winner of which will proceed to the global finals in Switzerland to compete against other regional winners for up to US$500,000 in equity investment.

“We have been very pleased with the quality of the startups in Johannesburg and Cape Town. We want to give the opportunity to the rest of South African entrepreneurs to compete at Johannesburg finals thanks to the wild card. We look forward to finding the last competitors of this final which look already very promising” says Claudia Makadristo, regional manager for Africa at Seedstars World.

Applicant companies need to be less than two years old, have raised less than US$500,000 in funding, and have a minimum viable product (MVP), ideally with existing traction.

Applications are open to startups from outside the Western Cape and Gauteng, here, until June 20.
