Global early-stage startups competition for emerging markets Seedstars World has opened applications for its first ever event in Cameroon.

Seedstars World is hosting local events across Africa this year, and has already picked winners in Mozambique, Tunisia, Tanzania, South Africa, Uganda, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Ghana.

The winner of the Cameroonian leg of the competition, which takes place in Douala at the ActivSpaces incubator on September 29, will head to Switzerland for the global final next year to pitch for the chance of winning up to US$1 million in equity investment. Applications are open here until September 22.

Up to 10 startups will be selected to take part, with companies applying required to be less than two years old, have raised less than US$500,000 in funding and have built a minimum viable product, ideally with existing traction. The Seedstars World team is also looking at potential regional and global scalability.

“Seedstars World is a platform connecting investors to the next generation of startup entrepreneurs, giving them an opportunity to scale their solutions regionally and globally,” said Anis Kallel, associate at Seedstars World. “Every year, we try to add more countries to our map, and prove that talent is truly everywhere. This year, we are coming to Cameroon for the first time, and we are excited to work closely with entrepreneurs and identify the role that Seedstars can play to support the local ecosystem in the future.”

Steve Tchoumba, business development manager of ActivSpaces, said the Seedstars event was a great opportunity for Cameroonian entrepreneurs to display their talents, creativity and innovations.

“From our vibrant Silicon Mountain in Buea to the electric coastal city of Douala, the tech scene in Cameroon has been growing at an exceptional rate. ActivSpaces is very proud to be hosting the first Seedstars competition in the country,” he said.
